At around 75 meters above sea level, near the peak of Makiyama (88 meters in altitude), the highest point on Irabu Island, is an encampment bunker along the pathway that leads to the Makiyama Observatory. From the loophole of the bunker, one can command a complete view of the western shorelines in the northern region of Miyako Island, and it is believed that this bunker was established to defend Hirara Port. It is also believed that, instead of building a bunker in a natural cave, this bunker was constructed by digging directly into limestone rock. The 1st Company of the 1st Heavy Field Artillery Battalion and the 3rd Company of the 28th Mountain Artillery Regiment were stationed here.
