Zuifuku Tunnel

Before the war, the areas of Suta-no Suma, Ikebaruzuku, Fukuchibaru, and Kajido were marsh grounds where a large pool of water appeared after every heavy rainfall. Especially, the area around Ikebaru, the body of water was like a lake where the water remained for two to three months and wreaked havoc to the crops. The topography in the area had high coastal areas, and the drainage of water through ditches was perceived as being impossible.
The then mayor of Gusukube village, Mr.Chogyu Zukeran, gathered over 400 landowners to organize an arable land readjustment union for Higa-Nagama. The organization initiated a large-scale drainage project which included approximately 7,000m of drainage ditch, 1,000m tunnel, and a flood control channel which extended a distance of 600m. The work began in 1933, and was completed in 1937. The tunnel was built with concrete, with a scale of 2.45m in height, 2.70m in diameter at the center, and 2.45m at the bottom diameter.

The tunnel was named Zuifuku Tunnel, taking a character from the mayor’s name so that his achievement would be remembered over the generations.
