【Designated by the City:Natural Monument (Flora)】Plant Community of Tomai Utaki Sacred Site

Plant Community of Tomai Utaki Sacred Site
The plant community is located at the western coast of Yonaha. The northern edge of the forest faces the ocean, and is trimmed with a Shimashiraki community. The forest floor, being at sea level, is fertile because of the accumulation of soil flowing into the bay, and forms a high tree forest. Such a unique view of the community is only seen here within Miyako Island. The community consists of a tree stratum that includes the tropical almond, Tabunoki, Japanese cinnamon, Sakishima-suonoki, banyan tree, Oobagi, chinaberry tree, Ryukyu pine, fountain palm, common garcinia, Kuroyona, Akou, Taiwan-enoki; a shrub layer such as Kurotsugu, Mokutachibana, Tsurugumi, Hamainubiwa, orange jessamine, beach hibiscus, mangrove, Gyokushinka, Gumimodoki; and a herbaceous layer including Kuwazuimo, golden pothos, Futou-kazura, and Habu-kazura.

In Tomai Utaki, the Nnafuka festival is held for three days from the day of Mizunoe-uma in September of the lunar calendar. The god of Nnafuka is believed to be the god of wealth, bringing an abundant harvest.
