【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Cenotaph for the Victims of the Tsunami in the 36th Year of the Qianlong Era (1771)
In the hills behind Maehama, Yonaha (commonly known as Maeyama) is a coral limestone monument that stands on a pedestal, measuring 64cm in height, 29cm in width, and 14cm in thickness. On the right side of the inscription at the front of the monument, one can decipher, “Kenryu Sanju-roku Nen San-gatsu Toka Onami (Cenotaph for the Victims of the Tsunami of March 10 of the 36th Year of the Kenryu or Qianlong era)” and at the center are the names, “Miyaguni, Shinzato, Sunagawa, Tomori”. This monument was erected as a memorial for the victims of a huge tsunami that followed a major earthquake (an estimate magnitude of 7.4) on March 10 of the 36th year of the Qianlong Era (April 20, 1771 in the Gregorian calendar), also known as “the Great Tsunami of the Meiwa Era,” with its epicenter at the seabed off the southeastern coast of Ishigaki Island.
