【Designated by City:Historic Site】Upudati Upudunu Myaaka
The Upudati Upudunu Myaaka is said to be the tomb of Upudati Upudunu, who was the head of Miyako Island in the late 15th century. The tomb follows the distinctive style of Miyako Island called “Myaaka” with rectangular limestones surrounding all sides of the tomb and cover stones placed on top.
The enshrined Upudati Upudunu was the grandson of Yonaha Sedo Tuyumya, who was the first person from Miyako Island to have brought a tribute to the Chuzan in 1390, and he is also known to have brought up Nakasone Tuyumya, who governed Miyako Island during the 15th and 16th centuries. The tomb was originally located near a coastal cliff, but due to landfills and road expansions, the terrain surrounding the tomb was changed; consequently, the tomb has been protected and preserved near the pedestrian walk at the intersection in front of the Matida Civic Theater.
