【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Curbstone of the Well of the Matsumura Family

Curbstone of the Well of the Matsumura Family

The Matsumura Family of Sugama Settlement is descended from Kawamitsu Uputunu, head of Shimoji. Within their residence, there is a hollowed curbstone in a circular shape which is 120 cm in diameter, 65 cm in height, and 90 cm in inside width. In addition to this one, the Morishima Family also has a similar curbstone, which is, however, slightly smaller.
Kawamitsu Uputunu is a prominent figure who achieved the Beutsu River Channel Project in 1498, and the Ikeda Bridge Project in 1506, with an expert of stone bridge building, invited from the main island of Okinawa. Therefore, it is easy to presume that there were also many stonemasons in Miyako at that time. However, there is no record in the Matsumura Family whether the well was created by Uputunu or his children.
