【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Kurima-ga (Fountain)

Kurima-ga (Fountain)

There is a 100-step stone stairway by the precipitous cliff at the north of Kurima Settlement. Tens of meters below the stairway, there is a copious flow of water from the only fountain on the island, which serves as a lifeline to the residents on Kurima. There has been an ever green oak in the fountain since some time in the past. When the people removed the tree, the water flow stopped, causing utter confusion in the community.
The people went to a Yuta, or a spirit medium for the god’s words, and they received an oracle that the removal of the tree was the cause for the suspension of the water supply. Following the god’s words, the people restored the oak tree, and then strangely enough, they saw the water start flowing again, which continues to flow today.

There is a poem relating to this site, that reads, “Even the difficulties of carrying water up and down the stairs by the cliff pay off because of my love for you. I am always thinking about you.
The fountain is no longer used as a water source since undersea water supply from Miyako Island began in 1975.
