Terrestrial Hermit Crabs Species (Genus Coenobita)

There are five species of coenobita genus confirmed in Okinawa prefecture:Onakiokayadokari (Coenobita brevimanus) in Miyako and the Yaeyama Islands; Nakiokayadokari (Coenobita rugosus), Murasakiokayadokari (Coenobita purpureus), Okayadokari (Coenobita cavipes) in Okinawa, Miyako, and the Yaeyama Islands; and Komurasakiokayadokari (Coenobita violascens) in the Yaeyama Islands. There has been one confirmed finding of Sakishimaokayadokari (Coenobita perlatus) on Kuro Shima in the Yaeyama Islands. With all confirmed species combined, there are six species of the genus Coenobita found within Okinawa prefecture.
The Komurasakiokayadokari (Coenobita violascens) has been confirmed on Miyako and Ikema Islands. The genus Coenobita inhabit areas mainly by the shores and among the vegetation in such areas, and they go into the sea temporarily to release their eggs in the sea. After spending the larval stage in the ocean, they come up onto shore and live on land. (Designated without a specific area.)
