【Designated by the City:Monument (Place of Scenic Beauty)】Coral Reef Lagoon & Atoll Lake of the Shore of Sawada
Located at the northwest of Irabu and Shimoji Islands, an arc-shaped fringing reef (also referred to as Inaukataparu) is the Coral reef Lagoon of the Shore of Sawada.
The beautiful Shore of Sawada, one of the 100 Best Shores in Japan; over 300 rocks that are considered to have been brought by the Great Tsunami of Meiwa; and a gently shelving shallow beach are art works naturally created by the subtropical environment, coral reef, and the Japan Current.
The atoll is one of the most prominent spots within the prefecture and has long supported the lives of the islanders as a good fishing ground. The ocean colors that change with the tides and weather, together with marine life of the tropics make a unique natural scenery. In addition, there is Katsu (structure) in the area, which extraordinarily adds to the beauty of the sun setting in the horizon.
From the scattering rocks, there is a theory that there have been three major tsunamis hitting the island over the past 2,000 years, aside from the Great Tsunami of Meiwa in 1771.
