【Designated by the City:Monument (Place of Scenic Beauty)】South and West Reef Coast of Shimoji Island
The south and west coasts of Shimoji Island vividly display distinguishing features of reef areas in Okinawa such as Tori-Ike, Nabizuku, Nagabidaiki, and Okoiki. There are many dolines unique to karst topography, and the area provides important examples of different lithofacies of limestone such as clastic sand, rudaceous limestone, calcareous algae, and coral limestone.
In particular, Shimoji Island is made up of reef on an unparalleled scale (karst tableland). The site should be preserved as layers of the Pliocene era are exposed, and it provides good observation spots to watch gray-faced buzzard-eagles flying. The place also provides a superb view of the sun setting below the horizon.
