【Prefecturally Designated:Natural Monument (Flora)】Plant Community at Kuninaka Utaki Sacred Site

Plant Community at Kuninaka Utaki Sacred Site

The site is located 200m east of the Kuninaka settlement, east of the Irabu Junior High School. The approach from the Torii gates at the main entrance is approximately 1.5m in width and 90m in length, and at the end is an open area of approximately 10m in width and length, surrounded by stone walls. In this open area is a small shrine with piled stones for walls and a concrete slab as a roof. On either side of this small shrine are Shishi lion statues.
In the surrounding areas are large trees such as the garcinia, Kokutengi, Ryukyu Kokutan, Japanese cinnamon, and Tsugemodoki with diameters at breast height at 25cm to 45cm. The site also has Tabu-no-Ki, white cedar, blush macaranga, Yanbaru Akamegashiwa, Ryukyu pine and other rich growth of about 60 varieties of plants which are about 8m to 9m in height.

The vegetation is also protected as part of the worship site, and so the whole area is covered with plant growth, showing a forest type that is the closest to a natural growth forest in all of the Miyako Islands.
