【Designated by the City:Tangible Folk】Yamaga Upuka
This spring is located about 500m north of the Yamagawa settlement. We can see from the records in the history book, Yoseikyuki (1727) that the spring was known since the age of Magiri. The Upuka spring was an important source of drinking water for the nearby residents until the completion of the water supply works in 1965. The water from Upuka flowed down to the shores below, creating a fertile land.
The paddies of this area is also referred to as Nagamada, and is known as the land given to Nakasone Tuyumya by King Sho Shin of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Later, the Nagamada came to be known as one of the few areas producing rice, and was managed by the descendants of Tuyumya. The slope leading to the spring was improved, turning into a stone-paved path, and the water from the spring was widely used. However, with the advancement of banana farming, the paddies changed to farm fields and the spring was no longer used for the paddies. Still, the water flows abundantly even today.
The Upuka spring is an important aspect in understanding the people and history of the area.
