【Designated by the City:Natural Monument (Geological Feature)】The Fault Escarpment and Abrasion Platform of Shimajiri
Surrounded by the beautiful ocean of coral reefs, Miyako Island has a unique natural environment from the perspective of (karst) topography and geological features. Among these features, the cliffs of Shimajiri is 5.25m in height, and over 400m in length, with an exposed tertiary layer, and a development of fault line, crustal fold line, underground water, and others. Discovered in the summer of 1973, were fossils of whale (the head portion) and shark (teeth), and we can observe the present day creatures (such as the Minami Kometsuki-gani crabs, and others) and collect fossils of living things from the past in the intertidal zones and cliff areas.
It is a living field of education for the children and the area has also garnered academic attention. Furthermore, the cliffs are an important resting area for wild birds.
