【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Harimizu Utaki Sacred Site and the Stone Wall

Harimizu Utaki Sacred Site and the Stone Wall

Surrounded with mythical tales of the creation of Miyako and the marriage with a serpent, this is a valuable Utaki or sacred site in studying the origin of the ancient people of Miyako. According to the family history of the main household of the Chudo-uji lineage, the stone walls on the south side was built upon the victory of Nakasone Tuyumya, the great-great-grandson of Meguromori, led by the Chuzan King’s government in 1500 in the fight against Oyake Akahachi of Yaeyama. It is said that Nakasone Tuyumya asked for the blessing and protection of the gods and spirts in this fight, and in return, he promised to build and dedicate this location as a sacred site.
Although the conquering of Oyake Akahachi is debated, the stone wall itself is a direct result of the labor and efforts of the local people and is valuable in learning the stonemasonry techniques of that time.
