【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Ruins of Mamuya’s Residence, Weaving Site and Tomb
Mamuya’s Residence Site is located on a small hill about 200 m south of Bora-Motojima. The surrounding soil has been removed and now it is a rise. The weaving site is a cave of two Tatami mats in size, situated at a northern quay 120 m west of the entrance to Bora Fishing Port in Higashi-Hennazaki. The tomb is a structure bored on a giant rock next to a rest area about 180 m east of the entrance to the fishing port.Although it is unclear which era Mamuya lived in, there are folktales or songs including Mamuya’s Ayagu (song), themed on her tragic love with Nugusuku-Anji. According to the song, Mamuya was a woman of extraordinary beauty scented with fragrant herbs.
She fell in love with Nugusuku-Anji who had family, and after being betrayed, she hid in a cave and threw herself in weaving. Legend has it that after completing a Jofu, or hemp cloth, she threw herself from a cliff of Higash-Hennazaki and died. She is now known as a tragic heroin.
