【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Kannon-do Kyozuka
The Kannon-do was constructed in 1699, and it is said that it was revered by the people as they prayed for the safe journey of the ships that carried their taxes in kind. The Kyozuka in the front part of the grounds, is one of the rare remains in Miyako that tells us of how Buddhism arrived here. The epitaph is engraved on the front with the characters, “経呪嶺 (Kyojurei),” and on the back are, “雍正丙辰冬白川氏恵道建焉.” The first four characters on the back is the year 1736, which is 37 years after the construction of the Kannon-do.
The next four characters tell us that the Kannon-do was constructed by Shirakawa-uji Keido, family name of Uechino, while he was the chief of Hirara from 1731 to 1737.
