Sukapuya Utaki

The surrounding area of Sukapuya Utaki is the district of Miyaguni-Motojima. The Utaki is a sacred site revered by the local residents as it is the primary venue for the Nnafuka festival. Legend has it that a jar of wealth flew to the place under the guise of a swan. During the three days between the days of Otsu-u (the Rabbit) and Mi (the Snake) in September of the lunar calendar, the local people hold a festival while keeping their cattle and horses inside and engaging in the Nnafuka abstinence. The coast in the area recalls a trading market in the past. Artifacts such as pieces of celadon ware from the Ming Dynasty period in China have been discovered in Miyaguni-Motojima.
It is said that the district was relocated to the current location as the settlement was afflicted withan enormous damage in the Great Tsunami of Meiwa in 1771.
