【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Gravestone of Shimoji-Miya-Risha
In 1879, at the time of the abolishment of feudal domains and the establishment of the prefecture, there were strong protests centered around the officials from the former government. Shimoji-Miya-Risha was killed by the crowd for cooperating with the governmtent. It is said that the body was discarded at the Tsuzupisuki cave, however, it was recovered and taken to the Gokoku Temple in Naha by the members of the police dispatched here. This is referred to as the Sanshi Incident, with the name derived from how Risha was one of the first to agree to proceed to a new era.
According to the inscription, Risha went on duty at the dispatched police staion on July 8, and on the 22nd, only two weeks after, he was killed. In 1921, Risha’s younger brother, Rikyu, reburied him in the tomb of the clan in Nishinakasone Higashi-Uehara, and the gravestone was erected at the house where he was born, in Shimozato.
This is an important gravestone which allows us to understand the society of Miyako as it entered the modern age, and the actions of the people.
