Maya Utaki Sacred Site

Inaishi, the creator of Miyako Jofu and her husband, Shimoji-Pechin-Shinei (commonly known as Moteagara) are enshrined here. Shinei is said to be a descendant of Moteanigyamori who joined the conquest of Yonaguni’s head, Unitora, led by Nakasone-tuyumya, head of Miyako.
When Moteagara was on the way to the capital as Sugamamura-yunchu, he drifted to the coast of Ming China in an adverse wind. Although he was able to board a tribute ship that happened to be there, the ship was again faced with an adverse wind. In the storm, a rope of the boat was cut and it was about to sink.

Then, Moteagara dived into the raging waves and replaced the rope. Thanks to him, the boat was able to return to their country. The news reached King Shoei’s ears, and the King called him and bestowed praise and the title of Shimoji-Pechin upon him.
Inaishi was born as the daughter of Nkaidate-uji, Uechi-yunchu, and later married Shinei. Impressed by the promotion of her husband, Inaishi was firmly resolved, and out of gratitude, worked hard for three years to create Ayasabi-fu, a fine fabric. She then presented the textile to King Shoei in 1583. Ayasabi-fu is also known as Tihei-fu. This is how the Miyako Jofu began.
