【war-related site】Machine Gun Bunker at Painagama

This bunker is located at the steep cliffs by the west end of the Painagama beach, at the base of the Nagasaki Peninsula. A passage is dug in the limestone, and only the gun crenel, or loophole, is made with concrete. Approximately eight meters from the loophole is a vertical passageway leading to the opening of the bunker. At high tide, the water rises to just below the loophole. It is believed that this bunker was made to ambush the enemy landing at Painagama.
