In the wake of the “10-10 Air Raid” on October 10, 1944, the portraits of the emperor and empress enshrined at each school on Miyako Island were brought to a bunker to be protected from the flame of war. The bunker was dug by the hands of male teachers from each school and guarded in 12-hour work shifts. Inside, there is a Shinto style altar, made of unvarnished wood. It is said that the teachers would pray at this altar before engaging in their protective duties.
