Yamatobu Giant Rock

A giant travertine rock below Makiyama Observatory, east of Irabu Island is called Yamatubugisu which is 25 m in height, 18 m in width, and 30,000 tons in weight. The rock was considered to have been used as a landmark to the entrance to the seashore of Tsumyagi where people first settled in Irabu.The rock is of Tomori Limestone that was exposed to the surface because of crustal movements at faults, etc.. Signs of stone quarrying in the past can be seen at nearby Makiyama.
The origin of the name remains unknown.
