【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Pyazu Utaki Sacred Site (Kunmaukya)

Pyazu Utaki Sacred Site (Kunmaukya)

It is located in Makiyama on the east of Irabu Island. According to the Yookyuki (1727), the enshrined god is Akaratomogane, who came to the island from Kume Island in around 1380, with his brother. They are said to have brought advanced farming culture, and iron agricultural tools to the island. It is said that the younger brother became the god of Pyazu, and the older brother became the god of Omoto-dake of Yaeyama.

Ancient people in Ryukyu called a god’s seating place Hiji, and the god’s residence Pyazu, which may be the origin of the name of the site.In addition, in the Sakishima Islands, the first community established there was called Fun, which was later corrupted into Furumi. It is said that as there was a front side (Mabukyu) in Fun, it has come to be called Funmabukya (Kunmaukya). The site is one of the most powerful Utaki within Irabu Island.

The god enshrined at Irauyukui, Nakachiyukui, Funnakayukui, and Nagahamayukui is Akaratomogane.
