【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Sawada Yukui

Sawada Yukui

Sawada Yukui, located 200 m west of Sawada Route and 200 m north of the Sawada community, enshrines Ufuyunushu, who is said to have come to Irabu Island from Okinoerabu Island in 1457. It is considered that Sawada Yukui was originally located at Shiratorizaki, and moved to the current location after a beacon system was instituted in 1644.Although the origin of Nishimura (present Sawada) is related to Kurohama Utaki, Ufuyunushu is enshrined in Sawada Yukui as he came to the island and spread agricultural skills in Nishimra. Those accompanied by Ufuyunushu from Okinoerabu Island are called Nama. The Utaki is important in substantiating that the people with advanced navigation skills were travelling in the Nansei Islands.

Although other Yukui in the southern region enshrine Akaratomogane, Sawada Yukui enshrines Ufuyunushu, indicating that origins of the communities are different. It is a historically important site.
