【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Nushi Utaki Sacred Site

Nushi Utaki Sacred Site
Located at the southeastern tip of Irabu Island and to the left side near the way to the shore of Toguchi, the site enshrines Tamamega, a daughter of Upuganishu, the chieftain of Tomi Village.
There is a ritual called Kanuri at the Utaki, proving that Irabu played a role during the trading era of Ryukyu. In addition, the Utaki was presumably created in around 16th century as Tamamega married the god on the night when her father, Upuganishu, came back from Yaeyama after learning how to observe a rainmaking rite. The site is still revered as a guardian of safe journeys.

Beside the Utaki, there stands a prayer site for Tamamega’s father, Opuganinotumya.
