【Prefecturally Designated:Historic Site】Takausu-jo Castle Remains

Takausu-jo Castle Remains

This is the remains of a castle that was constructed at the summit section of a hill (113m high) located north of the Higa settlement on the east coast of Miyako Island. The area expands approximately 70m east to west, and 40m north to south, and still remaining at the site are piles of natural stones, laid as they are as the foundation of the castle walls.
It is recorded in old history books of Miyako such as the Yoseikyuki (1727), Miyakojima Kiji-Shitsugi (1748), and others, that the lord of this castle was Takausu-azu, and with these records are information regarding the castle, such as its size. Excavations have uncovered earthenware, ceramics, old coins and ironware.

This is an important site where the Gusuku remains are well preserved, and gives us insight into how things were in Miyako before the Ryukyu Kingdom came to take control.
