【Prefecturally Designated:Historic Site】Uipyayama Site

Uipyayama Site

Located atop a Ryukyu limestone hill approximately 40m high at the south of the Sunagawa settlement, the site is from the 14th to the 15th century. Together with the Uruka Motojiima village site, this is a large site of where a settlement once stood. Discovered within the site include earthenware of Miyako and Yaeyama styles, celadon, Okinawan pottery, as well as pottery from Southeast Asia. There have been discoveries of numerous celadon in particular, and there are various theories as to why this is. Some believe this was a base point for pirates, or that this was a port town that prospered through trade, or that this was due to Miyako being a transit point of trade.Within the site are over 10 sacred sites. Among them, three are left as they were in the past ages, with thatched roofing on top of stone walls.

On top of the hill is a Tunkaifutsuisu, or observatory.
