Bora-Motojima Remains

The remains are settlement ruins from the 14th -15th century, formed on the high ground 50-60 m high. A part of them was excavated by H. Melichar and Erika Kaneko in 1965, and pieces of Chinese ceramics during the Song, Yuan, and early Ming dynasties in addition to pieces of earthenware of Miyako were unearthed.According to “History of Yuan” and “Wenzhou fu zhi”, “Burakoukanka-miyakojin” ran into a storm during a trading trip to south on two vessels, large and a small vessels, 1317, and the small boat was washed ashore on Yongjia County of Fujian, China. Fourteen people onboard were rescued and safely returned home on a ship from Quannan (then trading city) to Miyako. Bura is considered to be present Bora, and Miyako, the present Miyako.

On the site, there are caves called Motojima Utaki, Bunmya-ato, and Tatsuno-ya.
The remains are not limited to the ruins of a settlement but possibly the remains of a trading center in the past. The site is therefore of significance in exploring the history of Miyako.
