Site of the Kagamihara Racetracks

Located on the north side of the former main road of Gusukube, about one kilometer to the southeast of Kagamihara Elementary School, the racetracks are deeply connected to the abolition of the toll taxes that caused much suffering for the people of Miyako and Yaeyama Islands.

From around 1887, there were movements by the local farmers demanding political reform and the abolition of the tax in kind. Although the movements by the farmers saw much oppression from the former authorities, the people united in their calls for the abolition of the poll taxes. They sent four representatives, Jusaku Nakamura, Seian Gusukuma, Moshi Taira, and Kama Nishizato, to the central Meiji government and to the national assembly to make their pleas
In March of 1894, the petitioners returned with the promise of the tax abolition, and the farmers gathered at the Harimizu Port to welcome the petitioners home, and held a great celebration at the racetracks at Kagamihara, relishing in their achievements, and held horseraces and danced the Kuicha.
