Plant Community in Koujin Mimigama Utaki

This is a plant community embracing Koujin Mimigama Utaki, a sacred site. Because of the Utaki, the forests have been protected from development projects, and natural vegetation in the southern coastal area of Miyako Island can be observed.
At the near center of the plant community stands a worship site, around which grows a thick forest of four Taiwan-enoki (Chinese hackberry) trees, with diameter at breast height is 60-80cm, and two Kuroyona trees with breast-height diameter at 40cm. A secondary forest of trees such as Yanbaru-Akamegashiwa and Oobagi is formed surrounding the natural vegetation.

The plant community layers are almost divided into four layers. The Taiwan-enoki (Chinese hackberry) is prevalent in the tree stratum. In the sub-tree layer, Yabunikkei (Japanese Cinnamon), Taiwan-enoki and Habukazura are relatively prevalent. At the shrub layer and the herbaceous layer, Kurotsugu and Kuwazuimo are prevalent respectively.
