【Nationally Registered:Tangible Cultural Property】Onogoshi Drainage Channel
Located in the mountain forest of Ono in Miyakojima city, the tunnel was constructed in 1934. This area had an expanse of meadow, with poor drainage which kept the land always wet. With the objective to increase the usage of land for agriculture, the central Japanese government developed a zoning project for cultivation land in the mountain of Ono, and as a part of this project, the Onogoshi drainage channel was constructed. The structure is reinforced concrete in an arch-shape with a total length of 640m, approximately 1.7m in height and 1.8m in width.
The preservation is relatively good and it still functions as a drainage tunnel today. As aforementioned, for a structure constructed in the early Showa era (1926-1989), the Onogoshi drainage channel is a large in scale and is a rare example that reflects the high technical standards of that time and also for its historical background.
