【Designated by the City:Historic Site】Uuni-no-shu Utaki

Uuni-no-shu Utaki

There is an article in a history book called Miyakojima Kiji Shitsugi titled “The case of Nozaki Mitsusarya’s return after escaping from a southern island.” A man named “Uuni-no-shu” sailed to Ryukyu as a boatman. On his way back, the ship was drifted ashore on a southern island called Afura. Although Uuni-no-shu was killed, a sailor named Mitsusarya survived. He married a woman on the island and he learned the island’s customs and manners from her. Later, he managed to escape the island with her cooperation and returned to Nozaki Oyadomari. Legend has it that Mitsusarya brought the skull of Uuni-no-shu back to Shinzato and the villagers of Shinzato built a Myaka tomb and buried him. The site has later come to be called Uuni-no-shu Utaki.
Afura island is said to refer to Lyudao Island (Kasho Island), but it is said no such folktale remains on the island.
